Small Press Month

I've heard a rumor that March is National Small Press Month and, even if it isn't, I think it should be. How can you support small presses? Well, buy one of their books. If you can, buy it directly from them. Amazon (as do most book sites) takes a cut if you buy through them.

Just do a google search of "independent presses" or "small presses" and you'll come across many sites that have lists of such presses. Browse their catalogs. Buy a book.

Small and independent presses are the heart of literature -- more likely to be driven by quality and message rather than the bottom line.

If you write poetry, short stories, or literary novels, you will more than likely be submitting to small presses some day. Support the institutions that one day might support you.

My quote about Joyce's Ulysses

I'm reading James Joyce's Ulysses. Here's my quote on the book:

"Joyce's Ulysses and the dictionary are similar because they are both big books that are difficult for one to read from beginning to end. The dictionary is a little easier to finish, however, because it has a much better plot."

This Won't Be News to Everyone

Looking for places to submit your work (especially fiction)? Check out www.duotrope.com.

What an amazing, comprehensive site! However, before you look at one market, make sure you donate a little cash. It's easy, and it's the right thing to do.

If you use duotrope and you don't donate, you should be ashamed. And, you can't complain when the site founders finally decide to charge for their services.

Upcoming Book Signing

I apologize if I haven't posted much. I want to do more than just post publications, readings, and signings, but I'm really bogged down with papers this semester. Sorry.

In any case, I will be giving a reading and signing at Schuler Books and Music's Eastwood Towne Center in Lansing on March 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Hope to see some people there.
